Never Eat Alone [NFTW #58]

What’s good everyone? I hope we’re all doing well. Fall has come. I know this for sure as I’ve recently come back from my friend’s annual end of summer BBQ. For years I’ve used this event as a marker for the transition between the euphoria of summer and the more mellowed vibe of autumn. I caught up with some old friends and made some new ones. We ate food together and danced into the night. It was joyous! I came home thinking about the importance of genuine relationship building

Our spotlight book for this month is Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi, a renowned expert in the art of networking. Over the years networking has received a bad reputation. Networking isn't just about schmoozing at drinks receptions; it's about building genuine, mutually beneficial relationships.

👫 The Power of Relationships

Ferrazzi's book emphasizes that success is a team sport. He argues that one of the most valuable assets you can possess is a robust network of connections. These connections can open doors, provide guidance, and offer support when you need it most. They become your personal board of advisors, enriching your life and career.

🫴🏾 Give Before You Get

Successful networking is not about exploiting relationships for personal gain. Instead, it's about adding value to others first. In Never Eat Alone, Ferrazzi advocates the concept of "generosity networking." By helping others achieve their goals and providing support, you create a network built on trust and reciprocity. The more you give, the more you'll receive. That’s law.

🥘 The Art of the Dinner Table

One of the book's central concepts is the power of sharing meals. Ferrazzi believes that breaking bread with others fosters intimacy and strengthens connections. Sharing a meal is an opportunity to build deeper relationships, discuss ideas, and create lasting memories. It's not about transactional networking; it's about genuine human connection. Take some time in the coming weeks to catch up with an old friend or connect with someone who you would like to become a friend and go and grab a bite to eat. No agenda needed, just make sure the menu is good.

📈 Networking Never Stops

Networking isn't an occasional task; it's a continuous process. Ferrazzi emphasizes the importance of nurturing your relationships over time. Stay in touch, offer help, and be genuinely interested in others' lives and careers. Consistency is key to maintaining a strong network.

📱 Leverage Social Media

“Learn how to use social media sites like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook to make meaningful connections, spark engagement and curate a network of people who can help you with your interests and goals.”

Your personal brand isn't just about your expertise; it's also about your personality, values, and passions. Social media content allows you to showcase your uniqueness, giving your audience a more personal connection with you. It’s not unheard of for people to do business with individuals they like and relate to on a personal level. Your personal brand provides you with a competitive advantage.

Above all, building new relationships and cultivating existing ones should be a fun endeavour. Relationships are the life force of our time here on earth. Connecting with others provides us not only the opportunity to help someone else in their journey through life but it also provides our journey with even more meaning.
