Hip-Hop Turns The Big 50 [NFTW #45]
As Hip-Hop is set to turn 50 this year I reflect on why the profound importance of the genre. I also look into The E-Myth revisited and I share some thoughts on an album that have been in my rotation.
What’s good everyone? I hope we’re all doing well. This week I share some thoughts as Hip-Hop is set to turn 50. I also look into a book that I’ve been reading The E-Myth Revisited and Kofi Stone’s debut album Nobody Cares Till Everybody Does.
Hip-Hop Turns 50
The art of Hip-Hop can only be fully grasped by knowing the heart of Hip-Hop.
A group of inner-city kids who felt they had been forgotten and robbed of their own chance to participate in the American dream. They still had their voices but were told they weren’t important enough to speak. But their youthful rebellion reminded them that everyone has a story and every story is worthy in its own right. Even if you don’t have the celebrated vocabulary or diction of the day; if you speak with honesty on your experience it will resonate. I’m so thankful that Hip-Hop exists; it’s been a sound that has provided me the space to express my own feelings. My own jubilations, my own discontentment and ultimately my own hopes and dreams.
This song in particular has a nostalgic place in my heart. When I was straddling between two worlds. One that I knew I had outgrown and one unfamiliar and unwelcoming—I found solace in the lyrics of “I Ain’t Mad At Cha.” The song begins with a soulful and melancholic melody that sets the tone for the introspective journey that unfolds. 2Pac's introspective lyrics reflect on the evolution of a friendship that has changed due to life's circumstances. He expresses understanding and forgiveness, choosing not to hold any grudges or harbour negativity. Instead, he embraces empathy and reflects on the imperfections of human relationships.
2Pac's delivery is both vulnerable and passionate, as he pours his emotions into each word. His distinctive voice adds an authentic touch, making the listener feel like they're having an intimate conversation with the artist himself. The storytelling is vivid and captivating, painting a picture of struggle, growth, and resilience.
We’re just trying to survive the elements and navigate a path forward for ourselves and the people we love. We’re still in proximity to the flats but understand there’s a world that needs to hear our voice. As we venture into this new world we just hope we do the blocks, flats and estates we came from justice. While some of the people we leave behind remind us they’re not mad at us, they’ve got nothing but love for us and we should do our thing.
The E-Myth Revisited
Within the pages of this book, Gerber presents a compelling exploration of what it takes to build a successful business. In his relaxed and engaging writing style, he challenges conventional wisdom and reveals the hidden truths that can transform the way we approach entrepreneurship.
"The E-Myth Revisited" unravels the myths that often entrap entrepreneurs, shedding light on the three distinct personas that reside within them: the Technician, the Manager, and the Entrepreneur. Gerber masterfully dissects these roles and offers invaluable guidance on how to strike a harmonious balance among them. His wisdom resonates deeply as he encourages us to build robust systems, embrace innovation, and free ourselves from the constraints of self-employment.
If you want more information on the E-Myth; I would definitely recommend checking out the book. If you want a quick summary feel free to reference the video below.
Nobody Cares Till Everybody Does
Kofi Stone's 2019 album "Nobody Cares Till Everybody Does" is a mesmerising and thought-provoking musical journey that seamlessly blends introspective storytelling, catchy melodies, and captivating production.
Nobody Cares Till Everybody Does is a cohesive body of work that flows seamlessly from track to track. Each song adds a layer of depth to the overarching narrative, creating a sense of progression and growth. It's an album that rewards multiple listens, as new layers and nuances are discovered with each play-through. I only got put on to the album recently but it’s a very special tape.
